On the move for 15 years

Blue-bike never stops moving. Since the beginning of Blue-bike, we have grown from an innovative bike-sharing system into an integral part of sustainable combined mobility. Discover the key moments in our history.
2011
Establishment of Blue-bike
Blue-bike launches in May 2011 with more than 1,000 bicycles spread across 35 NMBS stations. It is therefore the first national shared bicycle network at Belgian railway stations.
2017
Expansion to 53 locations
Blue-bike is growing from a station project into a broader mobility network with 53 locations in 45 cities. Not only at NMBS stations, but also at De Lijn bus stops and car parks.
2020
Network continues to grow despite COVID-19
During the corona pandemic, the number of rides falls as commuting and travel drop sharply. At the same time, Blue-bike continues to invest in its network and the system has 68 locations. Membership has even risen above 21,000, partly thanks to the rediscovery of the bicycle during the pandemic.
2022
Accelerated growth to 110 locations
Following the pandemic, a strong growth phase follows: the network rises from 68 locations in 2020 to 110 locations in 2022. Blue-bike is rapidly opening new bike hire points at railway stations and bus stops.
2023
First back-to-many zone and first e-bikes
Blue-bike launches its first back-to-many systemin Geel, with 12 locations where users can leave a bike without having to return to the starting point. In Leuven, the fleet is being expanded to include e-bikes.
2024
Strong growth in transport regions
Blue-bike is rolling out new regional networks, including 65 locations in the Ghent transport region EN 17 locations in the Limburg transport region. This shifts the focus from stations to broader regional accessibility. Blue-bikes are also being provided for the Leuven transport region.
2025
Fully digital operation
Following a transition period, Blue-bike says goodbye to the key dispenser. From now on, every bike can be rented via the Blue-bike app. Thanks to the app, there are be more back-to-many zones, extended tariff formulas and new payment options.
2026
Electric shared cargo bikes in Leuven
Blue-bike is expanding its range from bike-sharing to electric shared cargo bikes. In collaboration with the City of Leuven, a network of 34 locations with electric shared cargo bikes was rolled out
